George Sowden was born in Leeds (England) in 1942. From 1960 to 1968, he studied architecture at Gloucester College of Art. After graduating, he moved to Milan in 1970, where he worked as a design consultant for Olivetti and met Ettore Sottsass.
In 1980, together with designer Nathalie du Pasquier, who later became his wife, he founded the SowdenDesign studio, which is still creatively active today. A year later, in 1981, Sowden was one of the founding members of the Memphis group.
In the 1990s, he increasingly specialized in the design of electronic devices. George Sowden continues to live and work in Milan and is regarded as one of the defining figures of postmodern design.
